Morgan Freeman: the actor who turned his ranch into a safe place for bee-friendly

di Carla Andrea Fundarotto

He transformed his estate in Mississippi into a bee sanctuary, a magical and suggestive place where insects can live safely outside the dangers that cause their extinction. The actor Morgan Freeman personally feeds the bees with water and sugar, without taking any honey.

“Bees are the basis of the planet growth. A common effort is needed to bring them back to earth”

said the Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor in Million dollar baby. The choice that made Freeman a beekeeper stems from the worrying world statistics on the extinction of insects. According to Greenpeace, in fact, between 1947 and 2005 the United States lost 59 percent of the colonies, from 1985 to 2005 Europe lost 25 percent of the colonies. Alarming data given that 70 out of 100 food crops are pollinated by bees, which are therefore responsible for 90% of world nutrition. The causes that threaten the extinction of bees are attributable to climate change and the use of pesticides in agriculture.
