Spain says goodbye to plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables in supermarkets and shops

An initiative in support of the environment that provides for a stop to plastic packaging starting from 2023. The ban on the packaging of fruit and vegetables will apply to all batches weighing less than 1.5 kg.

What will the measure foresee?

The Spanish government will promote measures to continue the wholesale sale of fresh products without packaging among retailers. Customers will be allowed to bring their own reusable containers to fill inside the stores.

Furthermore, the government is already thinking of alternatives for the sale of packaged drinks, promoting the installation of drinking water sources in public spaces in order to avoid the use of plastic bottles here too.

What is the goal of the Spanish government?

The goal is to reduce the sale of plastic beverage bottles by 50% by 2030 and, at the same time, reach 100% of the recyclable containers to be placed on the market.
